Nursing informatics is the bridge between healthcare, IT, and information management. It covers a wide range of topics including digital care documentation, telemonitoring, clinical decision support, data protection, and patient-generated data. International bodies such as TIGER (Technology Informatics Guiding Educational Reform) and the IMIA (International Medical Informatics Association) emphasize that digital competencies should no longer be considered optional, but rather fundamental skills for professional nursing practice.
What Makes NURIC Unique?
The NURIC project stands out because its curricula and course materials are built on these international standards while being carefully adapted to the local needs and education systems of the partner countries.
Midterm Review: What NURIC Has Achieved So Far
After 18 months of project work, the interim results are highly promising:
- National curricula for nursing informatics have been developed in Kosovo and Israel.
- An international self-assessment tool for evaluating digital competencies has been created in three languages and is currently being published.
- Numerous nursing educators and trainers have been trained through a dedicated Train-the-Trainer program.
- The first Nano-Courses – short, modular training units – were launched in spring 2025.

Looking Ahead: The Next Steps
In the second half of the project, the focus will be on:
- Full pilot implementation of Nano-Courses and certificate programs
- External evaluation of results
- National recognition of the developed curricula
Looking further ahead, a major international conference in 2026 will present NURIC’s results and educational materials to a broader audience.
The NURIC project demonstrates that nurses can actively shape the digital transformation of healthcare – provided they are equipped with the right knowledge and tools. By embedding digital competence into nursing education and professional development, NURIC is helping to ensure that healthcare systems are ready for the future.
