Digital transformation continues to reshape the healthcare landscape, demanding new competencies and innovative approaches to education. The NURIC Project (Nursing Informatics Competences), funded by the European Union, addresses this need by strengthening nursing education through the integration of informatics and digital health across Europe and beyond.
One of the project’s most impactful components is the Train the Trainer concept — designed to equip educators with both technical expertise and didactic innovation. Led by UMIT TIROL and implemented with partners from Austria, Italy, Greece, Israel, and Kosovo, this initiative ensures that nursing informatics becomes a sustainable and embedded part of nursing curricula.
The Train the Trainer model follows a cascading approach:
- First, select trainers are equipped with the latest knowledge in nursing informatics and modern teaching methodologies.
- These trainers then conduct Train the Teacher workshops within their home institutions, expanding expertise among nursing educators.
- Finally, these newly trained educators integrate nursing informatics into existing courses — ensuring a long-term, system-wide transformation of nursing education.
This structure creates a multiplier effect, building a network of qualified educators who champion digital transformation within healthcare education.
Through a series of structured workshops held between November 2024 and February 2025, participants developed new teaching strategies, explored digital tools, and designed course modules that merge technology with nursing practice. The sessions covered topics ranging from instructional design and digital didactics to telehealth, electronic health records, and clinical decision support systems.
By combining professional expertise with educational innovation, the Train the Trainer concept strengthens the foundation for a new generation of nurses — professionals who are confident, competent, and ready to lead in the digital era of healthcare.
